Most are the descendants who arrived between the early and the mid-20th century.〔(Chinese People of Malaysia )〕〔(Malaysia - history )〕 In 2010, there were nearly 6,960,900 people self-identifying as "Chinese" who hold Malaysian nationality (including Malaysian-born and foreign-born people of Chinese descent). This number excludes those who do not have Malaysian citizenship (MyKad): permanent residents and non-citizens. Malaysia is the home to the second largest community of Overseas Chinese in the world, after Thailand. Within Malaysia, they are usually simply referred to as "Chinese" and represent the second largest ethnic group in Malaysia after the ethnic Malay majority. Malaysian Chinese are a socioeconomically well-established middle-class ethnic group and make up a highly disproportionate percentage of Malaysia's upper middle class, with a record of high educational achievement, and one of the highest household incomes among minority demographic groups in Malaysia. Malaysian Chinese are dominant in both the business and commerce sectors, controlling an estimated 70% of the Malaysian economy.〔(Malaysia's Warring Chinese Politicians ). ''Asia Sentinel''.
